Saimaiyu Akesuk is the daughter of Lau & Olayuk Akesuk who were one of the first members of the Legislative Assembly in Nunavut, Canada.

Saimaiyu first developed an interest in drawing after being inspired by the work of  acclaimed graphic artist Ninglukulu Teevee whom she studied alongside during her time at Nunavut Arctic College where they took part in the Nunavut Teaching Education Program.

The assumed similicity of her work often overlooks the strength and confidence with which she depicts her subjects. Her deep knowledge and care towards the more-than-human lives of artic dwellers is keenly

expressed in her animal portraits which include many animals unique to the region such as polar bears, arctic seabirds and lemmings. She often depicts spirits who dwell in the tundra and along the ice filled seashores of her home.
