Titled Lake Trout Near Our Camp, this original stonecut and stencil print was created by Inuit graphic artist and sculptor Kingmeata Etidlooie in 1983.
Etidlooie was best known for her contributions to the advancement of Inuit art through her experimentations with painting in the late 60's, early 70's where she was the first Inuit artist from Kinngait to work with watercolors. Her artwork (which already held a painterly quality) developed to include bold color fields and new textures, skilfully achieved through the mixing of painting, drawing and printmaking techniques.
ᐃᓱᒐᖅ/Isugar [Lake Trout] are a freshwater char widely distributed throughout the major river and lake systems of mainland Nunavut in the Kivalliq and Kitikmeot regions. Isugar are known for their beautifully spotted, colorful bodies that can grow up to 10-23 kg in weight. This print was made by Etidlooie with a variety of printmaking techniques to showcase the isugar's stunning display of colors and patterns.
