Ooloosie Saila is the granddaughter of celebrated sculptor and graphic artist Pauta Saila. As a child she often visited the home of acclaimed Inuit artist Kenojuak Ashevak, and was inspired by her discipline and perseverance. In 2015, she started her career as an artist by becoming a member of West Baffin Eskimo Cooperative at just aged 15, and began creating work at the acclaimed Kinngait Studios.
Her body of work covers a diverse range of themes but most recently focuses on northern Artic landscapes. She is known for her large scale landscape drawings that feature intricate detailing and line work. Her signature style includes creating eye catching textures through the use
of unusual patterns such as squiggles, stripes, and dots to create expressive, painterly compositions. Her work often features bold colour patches that emphasise the colossal energies of Arctic landscapes as they change through the seasons.
Ooloosie is becoming one the most promising emerging artists from the co-op in recent years, having developed a strong, distinctive style that has seen her work included in multiple museum collections of note; including Montreal Museum of Fine Art and the Winnipeg Art Gallery. As well as exhibiting across Canada, her work has also been exhibited in New York, including at the Art On Paper Fair in 2018.
