Ninglukulu Teevee is one of Kinnigait's most celebrated contemporary graphic artists to date, known for her comprehensive knowledge of Inuit oral history and her fine sense of design and composition.
In particular her utilisation of stonecut printing techniques coupled with her application of colourful stencilled designs brings clean, crisp detailing and bold backgrounds to her prints. Her high level of technical skill, and intelligent renderings of both highly personal stories and fantastical encounters with the spirits and animals of the arctic make her work highly sought after.
Female figures from Inuit oral tradition are tenderly interspersed throughout her body of work. She is very passionate about keeping the stories told by her ancestors and elders alive through her art, and does so in both moving and comical ways showcasing her versatility. Such works feature creation stories, tales of mistreatment and its consequences, tales of the legendary traveller, Kiviuq, animal fables, and stories that relate the activities of shamans and the various spirits that inhabit the Shamanic belief system.
She has exhibited widely throughout North America and has held solo shows in major public galleries and Museums such as the Canadian Museum of Civilisation and the National Gallery of Canada. In 2023, she was the recipient of the prestigious Kenojuak Ashevak Memorial Award.
Ninglukulu is also the author of Alego (2009) a beautifully illustrated, autobiographical tale of a young girl called Alego who goes clam digging with her grandmother for the first time, discovering the wonders of Kinngait’s seashores. The book was shortlisted for the Governor General's Literary Award for Children's illustration in 2009. Her art has also featured in many print publications from art catalogues to magazines and can be found on clothing, accessories and giftware across Canada.
As well as an acclaimed practising artist she also serves her community in her full time role with the Department of Housing in Kinngait [Cape Dorset].
