Nicotye Samayualie is from a well known family of Kinngait based artists including her parents, Kudluajuk Ahoona and Johnny Tunnillie Samayualie, and grandmother Keeleemeeoomee Nicotye who was a known for her graphic art during the 1970-80's.
Patterns fascinate Nicotye, and her work often brings together seemingly disparate arrangements of human made and natural objects in surprising ways. Her work often orients around the close observation of everyday utilitarian items and architectures such as tools, food, roadsides and camping supplies; reflecting her experiences living within vast, ancient landscapes that are intersected with modern day signs of
human habitation. Nicotye's drawings in particular carry an intricate level of execution that is both soulful and contemplative.
Her work has been featured in many of the Cape Dorset Annual Print Collection releases and since 2011 she has begun to exhibit throughout North America, including at the Toronto Art Fair.
