Quvianaqtuk Pudlat comes from a family of well-known artists based in Kinngait; including both his parents who were known for their prints and his grandfather Simeonie Quppapik who was an artist, printmaker and typographer. Quvianaqtuk gained his popularity initially from his work as a sculptor and is known for his carvings of animals and birds which are included in many fine collections, including the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and the National Gallery of Canada.
In recent years, his practice has transitioned towards the creation of drawings and prints, the first of which were included in the Cape Dorset Annual Print Collection in 2017. Quvi, as he is referred to by his friends, is a serious hunter and his keen observations of the natural world are
reflected in the movement and anatomy of the animals in his compositions.
From 2002 to March 2023 Quvianaqtuk traveled to Scotland to participate in an international partnership project called PrintArctic which connected the acclaimed Kinngait Studios in Nunavut, Canada to Scotland’s Edinburgh Printmakers. Supported by the Scottish Government’s Arctic Connections Fund, the project facilitated an artist residency and program of cultural and expertise exchanges as well as the creation of new international learning and research opportunities.
Quvianaqtuk has exhibited widely throughout North America and he was recently featured in the 2023 Canada Pavilion at the Gwangju Biennale in South Korea.
